A long day filled with rigorous battles of knowledge, quick thinking, structured argumentation, and intense criticism is just another weekend for Political Science Major Abbie Kruse
Kruse, a senior, currently leads the Northwest University Debate Team, constantly testing her skills against schools across the nation. Aside from various tournament accolades, she most recently placed 2nd at Pacific University’s tournament.
In addition to her impressive debate skills, Kruse is also one of the few Political Science majors here at Northwest. Originally a Communications major, the debater let her passion for justice and law and her desire for something more lead her to make the switch.
As Kruse has progressed, she has allowed herself to grow and find what she wants to offer to the ever-changing political system in the future.
Recognizing the limited number of women in politics, let alone those who are Christian, this woman of faith wants to be a breath of fresh air in the political system.
Often, Christian politicians are viewed as radical or hypocritical, but Kruse has the passion and drive to bring humanity back to the political system and represent Christ’s followers in a manner that both glorifies God and promotes a positive view of Christians today.
Kruse’s tenacity and go-getter attitude is forging a well-lit path for her to chase her dreams, and she recently started interning at the Washington Policy Center in Seattle. This 17-member strong, non-partisan think tank looks at creating free market solutions and adaptable policies.
Although some of her tasks may be small, the individuals she comes in contact with are big. Kruse isn’t afraid to take on the challenge, learning everything she can in the hope of being accepted to law school next fall.
“In the profession that Abbie has chosen, the centrality of her faith to her life is an important part that will help her not use her quick wit for ill-gotten gains but to better the world,” said Professor Jacob Witt, head debate coach, who has had the opportunity to watch Kruse evolve in her skills.
Perhaps friend and fellow debater Annaliese Herms sums it up best: “Abbie constantly gains the respect of everyone she comes in contact with. She has the ability to analyze complex issues and formulate realistic solutions. I have no doubt she will be immensely successful in anything she pursues.”
