The track and field team just finished up their
indoor track season sending two runners to Ohio for
the National Indoor Track and Field Championships
held on March 6-8.
Erica McDaniel & Jonathon Ferguson are the two
individual runners who earned the invitation at
meets in January and February. Head Coach Mark
Mandi could not express enough how proud and
excited he was for both of them to accomplish this
With only two seniors on Coach Mandi’s track team, he explained how excited he was for the underclassmen to grow into leaders.
One of those seniors, Sigrid Thoreson, ran a half marathon in Arizona in January and qualified for nationals in May. In addition to running 60-70 miles per week, Thoreson also student teaches and completes homework. Coach Mandi commented on how great she has been at organizing her time.
With outdoor track season approaching, different training regimen will also be making a debut. For the women’s distance group, it’s not unusual to see them meet at 5:30 a.m., a time when most students are sound asleep, and run multiple miles.
The sprinters and jumpers meet at 3:30 p.m. at Lake Washington High school and share the track with the high school track team. The Eagles are both thankful and blessed to be allowed to share the facility.
Both the men and women of the track team hold separate bible studies that not only serve to help one another grow in Christ, but grow as a team family as well. Captaining the studies for the ladies are Meagan Governor, Sigrid Thoreson, and Kaisa Hall. For the men’s group, it’s Jonathon Ferguson. The track and field team may go unnoticed from time to time since they do not have a track on campus and often only meet in the Seattle area. The team relies on one another and their leaders to be held accountable and run for God first and the team second.
Looking to the future, there are exciting meets and events on the horizon for the team. The Oregon Preview Meet, for example, is held at the University of Oregon, a venue where the last two Olympic trials have been held, and is a meet that the team always looks forward to every year.
All in all, the students in track are more than just a team. Working hard and closely with one another, they truly are an athletic family. If you’re ever interested in joining the track and field family here at Northwest, Coach Mandi’s door is always open!
